Optional Excursions & Special Travel FAQ

What are optional excursions? How much do they cost?

We offer these exciting activities as a supplement to what’s already included in your itinerary. Some Group Leaders choose to add optional excursions to all participant accounts. The cost varies depending on the particular activity. Log in to My Account to find out which optional excursions are available for your tour.

What is the deadline for adding an optional excursion?

To secure a discounted price, optional excursions need to be purchased by 50 days prior to departure. Most optional excursions can be purchased on tour at a slightly higher price (though there are a few that must be purchased prior to departure).

How do I sign up for an additional excursion?

The best way to add an excursion to your tour is to log in to My Account and select "Manage your tour" from the left menu. Choose the "Optional excursions" tab to see what is available on your tour and to select an excursion. You can also call Customer Service at 800-665-5364. Group Leaders often make optional excursions mandatory for their groups, so be sure to speak with your Group Leader about the excursions that interest you. Please keep in mind that all optional excursions must be booked by 50 days before departure.

Can I go ahead of my group or stay behind after the tour ends?

The stay ahead/stay behind request must be submitted to EF no later than 110 days prior to departure of your tour. Travelers are responsible for making their own arrangements to and from the hotel or airport, as well as all land arrangements—such as booking a flight or hotel—until you receive your final tour itinerary and departure dates (which occurs approximately 70 days prior to departure). It is also important to note that your entire itinerary might change as a result of a stay ahead or stay behind. If you choose to stay behind, for example, this might mean that you have a different outbound flight from the U.S. than the rest of your group. To request special travel arrangements, log in to My Account, choose "Manage your tour" from the left menu, and then select the "Special travel" tab.

What if I need to depart from a different city than the rest of the group?

Alternate departure airports are possible. The program fees offered by EF are based on group departures. If an individual chooses to fly out of a different airport than the group, the program fee of the alternate airport will apply. Travelers must depart from and return to the same domestic airport. To request special travel arrangements, log in to My Account, choose "Manage your tour" from the left menu, and then select the "Special travel" tab.

Can I skip a portion of my flight?

No. Skipping a leg of your scheduled flight can lead the airline to cancel your entire ticket, delay the rest of the group, or charge fees for the unused portion of the ticket.

I purchased an optional excursion that didn’t run on tour. How and when will I receive a refund for this?

You can expect a check to be mailed to you within 8-10 weeks of your return date.EF is a fully accredited educational institution, which means teachers can earn professional development credit just by taking students on an EF tour and completing required coursework. Your students can also earn high school or college credit.
